Puppy Heartbreak

When we snuggle our new puppy for the first time. When we make that initial connection with coos and wiggles. When we anticipate all the adventures to come. We don’t think about the last time.

When we get them settled at home, set them up all cozy in their crate next to our bed that first night, we don’t think about the last night.

And when we’re pulling our hair out because we weren’t paying attention and they chewed something important, we don’t think about how someday we’ll wish they were still here.

The clock starts ticking the moment you meet your puppy. In that instant, it’s the longest amount of time you’ll ever have together.

But we don’t think about that with our puppies.

We think about it once we’ve spent a few years together. We’ve built that special relationship, or when we’ve realized they’re our heart dog. And we begin to grasp that life without them won’t just be hard, it feels like it will be impossible.

My dogs become my best friends. They provide me with something that no human ever can. I would walk to the ends of the earth for them. They are everything to me.

And with each dog I’ve lost, with each soul crushing heartbreak, I wonder how it is that I would ever put myself in a situation that sets me up for so much pain.

But then I meet a puppy. And it starts all over again.
